Academic Journey

My name is Kenneth and I am a student (soon graduate) at the University of Washington in the Community, Environment, and Planning and Interaction Design programs. My academic focus aims to understand and design just and equitable systems that empower communities to take stewardship to their environments, particularly with land-use and placemaking processes.

Below are artifacts from my time in school. These represent significant experiences, meaningful moments, and symbols of heightened personal growth.

Artifact 1

Teach-In Presentation

A slide from the teach-in on the topic of Mutual Aid for the Community Equity Committee that we had presented during forum to the CEP cohort.

The teach-in was the first project in CEC that felt like I had a heavy hand in the committee. I first proposed the idea to begin teach-ins on equity-based topics, made a reading schedule, built a curriculum outline, and presented it with the group. I'm very proud to announce that these internal education events are now regularly occuring and the next cohort have plans to continue them.

Paris Study Abroad

A film photo I took while on the Paris: The Future is Green Study Abroad in Summer 2024.

This is the first time I experimented with film photography. This entire study abroad trip and summer was a series of asking what I actually enjoyed, both in terms of hobbies and career-wise. I started really enjoying urban planning, and we went on tours of green spaces, public plazas, presented to the firm AREP who plans and designs Paris's metro, and explored an alleyway for my final... I learned that I really like film photography, fruit, lying down and reading in parks, jazz bars, journaling, and exploring the everyday life around me.

Tokeland Site Tour

A video after a site tour for the CEP Urban Planning Studio class at the Tokeland Marina. We went down to water and began skipping rocks.

The Autumn 2024 quarter was a lot of continuing that asking of what I enjoyed and then carrying it out. That quarter, I took on 4 project-based classes, a design research class, two urban planning studios with clients, and my senior project. I enjoyed the topics of all of them and developed a direction for where I might want to go career-wise, and better figured out how to carry out my passions. I also need to improve on my rock-skipping game—I'm at a 35% success rate right now.

Senior Project FIlming Day

This very poor quality photo is the only oneI have documenting the "doing" part of my senior project. Here is me filming an interview with someone off-screen.

My CEP senior project is the first giant solo project that I have carried through from ideation, to research, to methods, and to presentation. I don't think I have carried out a project to this scale, over this months-long timeframe, and needing to manage so many variables before. I am very proud to have taken on this personal feat, even more proud that the project is meaninful to my communities and to myself, and I have learned so much to end off my time as an undergraduate student.
